Travel trouble

April 23rd, 2010 (12:42 pm)

I'm feeling: stressed

Okay, so I've been caught up in all this travel chaos that has stemmed from the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland. I was meant to go home on Sunday night, to land in the UK Monday morning, but my flight was cancelled when UK airspace remained closed. I was told that I couldn't be put on a reserve list for when flights resumed or anything like that; instead I would just have to wait until the airspace opened up again and then try to get myself on a flight then.

Well, that is what I did. And do you know when the airline gave me a flight for? The 3rd of MAY! When my flight was meant to be on the 19th of APRIL! Now I appreciate that people with small children or elderly people need to be flown home first but even so - a single traveler having to wait over two weeks to get on a flight - that's a little bit insane.

So I've been scouring the internet every day for something else but have been unable to find anything actually affordable, and my father has been having the travel agent at his company trying to find an earlier flight too, with any airline, via any route, and today they succeeded in booking one for $1000 for a one-way economy ticket to London on the 1st of May...

...the 1st of May! Don't get me wrong, I'm in a much better position than most people in that I am staying with relatives at the moment and thus am not forking out a fortune in hotel bills, and Malaysia is quite a nice country to be stranded in, and I am very grateful for that...

I want to go home! The prospect of spending another 10 days trapped here is infuriating. I'm annoyed that I'm missing two weeks of work, which I most likely will not be paid for, and that I am dropping a lot of my colleagues in the shit so to speak by leaving them understaffed. I know that I'm not the only teacher or what-have-you missing from the school, and 1/4 of all the bloody pupils are stranded abroad too for goodness sake, but even so I just feel so useless sitting over here, being bored.

I'm also very aware that my stepmother has her niece and two nephews arriving to stay on the 28th and that I am kind of in the way here, taking up time and space they don't have, and just generally feeling like I've over-stayed my welcome or something.

I don't know. Stupid volcano. And stupid airlines for not doing more to help out stranded people. And stupid EU for over-reacting to the whole thing in the first place and causing all this mess.

Yay! Holidays!

October 1st, 2009 (01:23 pm)

I'm feeling: cheerful

So I have been busy looking into holidays for the next academic year, which has made me a very happy bunny indeed! Tentative plans thus far:

December: 4 days in Belgium on a Xmas markets tour    BOOKED

February: Week-long piss up in Malaysia in honour of the old man's 50th

April: Two weeks diving in the Philippines

May: Disneyland with the kids

July and August: Diving in Malaysia, and a trip to Oberammergau to see the Passion Play. Maybe a week in the Maldives too.

Yay for travel plans!

You know, it's times like tonight that remind me why I love my job.

Why do all teenagers seem to be inflicted with a certain stupidity? If I tell them off for talking after lights out, do they really think I won't mind if they then continue to talk? And do they really think that I can't hear them giggling and yelling from across the hallway? Despite the fact that I have managed to catch them out at this every night for the last two years? Why are they still surprised when I catch them talking and tell them off?

Cooking woes

September 12th, 2009 (10:56 am)

I'm feeling: sick

So the 11 year old sister decided that she wanted to re-create a recipe she was taught this week in her DT class, and now the house stinks of scorched apple and overcooked oats. I wouldn't even mind that much if she had managed to produce something even passably edible as a result, but oh no. I've just had to sit here eating burnt apple and trying not to throw up as she looked at me all eager-eyed. It was awful.

1. Open your music library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.).
2. Put it on shuffle and press play.
3. For every question, type the song that's playing. When you go to a new question, go to the next song.
4. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool.

England vs. Australia

October 6th, 2007 (03:47 pm)

I'm feeling: hyper

I can't believe we just bloody won! How good was that match?! Finally, FINALLY we played as we should have been doing all along and we deserved that win so much. And what a win! What a dramatic match!

I can't believe we're in the semi-finals! I can't believe we beat Australia!

I can't believe I've used so many exclamation marks in one post - heh!

Oh my God, but that has just made my weekend.

You know you're back in the UK when you wake up at 8am on an August morning to find it pissing down with rain.

Oh England, how do I love thee? Heh!

December 14th, 2006 (07:57 pm)

I'm feeling: angry

Twenty minutes before we were due to close this evening who should walk into the shop? Bloody Emma! She came running up to the counter looking all panicked and babbling "I've got something to tell you!" So of course I enquired as to what was wrong with her now, and she started going on about how she had taken a load of pills and about how her father wanted her dead and was really mad at her and she didn't feel well and she had nowhere else to go...

Well what could I do?! Instead of ignoring her like we're supposed to, Penny and I had to start talking to her softly and kindly and we managed to get it out of her that she had taken a load of paracetamol (she handed us the empty packets) and that she was feeling really ill. So of course I had to go and call an ambulance and the police and then keep her talking whilst we waited for them to turn up and do you know what that little cow did when they arrived? She ran and locked herself in the toilets and wouldn't go with the paramedics, who themselves knew who she was - it appears she does this kind of thing pretty frequently. So they manage to get her out of the toilets eventually and she still refused to go with them; it wasn't until the police turned up and actually dragged her out of the shop that she got into the ambulance.

But do you know what the worst thing is about all of that? Now that Penny and I have talked to her she'll keep coming into the shop, because she'll believe we're her friends. We haven't got a hope in hell now that she'll get the message to just leave us alone because all she'll see is two people who helped her when she needed it.

Little bitch! I can't believe she forced my hand like that.

December 13th, 2006 (08:01 pm)

I'm feeling: sore

What a crappy afternoon! Crazy-stalker-woman (otherwise known as Emma) turned up this afternoon and was loitering inside the shop, so I duly called the police and they came out to arrest her again, but she kicked off when she saw them and spent five minutes stood in the street screaming as loud as she could and kicking and hitting the policemen before running back in the shop, trying to grab me and screaming "I HATE YOU!" Which was nice of her.

Then I managed to lose £80 as I was closing down and I don't know where it has gone, so I'm going to get told off about that tomorrow.

And finally I whacked my head whilst doing up the slot machine and I can just feel the concussion developing already.

It's a good thing I love my job.

I'm feeling: blah

Also, must remember to take that letter about crazy-stalker-woman to the police station today.

And to ring up the shop landlord to get the leaking roof fixed AGAIN.</div></div>

Oppotunity knocks

September 17th, 2006 (10:11 pm)

I'm feeling: optimistic

Have finally gotten off my arse and decided to start looking for another job - ironically just when my manager and I seem to be getting on for the first time since April - and I've already found a nifty one that I'm definately going to apply for. It is for a guard-type person at Oakington Immigration Center and it basically seems to involve keeping an eye on a load of immigrants to make sure they behave themselves properly whilst they wait to find out what will happen to them (something I seem to do every afternoon at Ladbrokes anyway, what with all those Chinese and Eastern European people around). The hours are a bit shitty but the pay is much better than what I'm on at the moment and lets face it - it would be a bit different to the usual office work and shop managing that I'm most likely to end up doing.
And in other news, my father may be taking up a job offer in Australia - so yay! Different part of the world to visit.

July 26th, 2006 (07:44 pm)

It has been absolutly pissing it down here for nearly half an hour now and the High Street which I live above is temporarily flooding; it has to be under three inches of water already.

And the guttering in the passageway beneath our flats can't cope either and there is an inch of water down there now; I'm getting quite worried about it actually. Not because it is going to do any damage to my property but because it doesn't really have anywhere to drain away to and another inch or so would see it reach the stairs. It will be a right bugger to clear up.

And now it is hailing again!

Is still bloody hot though :o(

Jesus! This has got to be the most rain we have had all year!

Eep! Lots of lightning!

*runs and hides*

EDIT 2:

Well it has stopped raining and all the water has gone from my neck of the woods, but apparently it is flooded down by Burns Road - must be where those fire engines were going.

Oooh there is a film crew in the street right outside my house. Wonder what they are doing?
